Common renter questions

My landlord won’t make repairs. What can I do?

North Carolina landlords are required to make repairs so a rental is safe, decent, and sanitary. Contact Legal Aid of North Carolina or Pisgah Legal Services for help, and see LawHelpNC for plain-language guides on repairs.

How do I get on a waiting list for a housing voucher?

The Asheville Housing Authority manages Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8) in Asheville. As of October 2026, its voucher waitlist is open and applications are accepted online only at haca.org. Call 828-258-1222 with questions.

Can I really go from renting to owning?

Start with a homebuyer class and counseling at OnTrack WNC, then ask a lender about North Carolina down payment assistance. The Housing Fair on November 7 is a good chance to talk with lenders and housing counselors in person.
